Dieses Buch spielt in Warschau, im Jahre 1940. Es erzählt eigentlich die Geschichte der damals im Ghetto lebenden 400 000 Juden. Doch es erzählt nicht die Geschichte eines jeden Einzelnen. Einige Personen, Ärzte, Kinder, etc. sind es, die wir hier kennen lernen. Beschreiben wird ihr Kampf ums Überleben. Beschreiben wird, wie die Kinder Tunnel graben oder über die Mauer klettern, um Nahrung zu besorgen, wie man den Sterbenden die letzte Ehre erweist… Ein Jugendbuch wie es zu diesem Thema kaum ein besseres gibt. Zwar wird nur die Geschichte ein paar Wenigen erzählt und trotzdem hat man das Gefühl, mit allen 400 000 gelebt und gelitten zu haben… Bis zum Schluss, bis zum letzten Transport…Dieses Buch ist vor allem als Schullektüre sehr zu empfehlen. Vielleicht in der Zeit, in der im Geschichtsunterricht das Dritte Reich behandelt wird. Hier gibt es nicht nur Zahlen und Namen, sondern das Leben wie es war….

Warschau im Jahre 1940 - das Getto wird errichtet - zeitweise leben dort fast eine halbe Million Menschen auf engstem Raum zusammen. Zum Teil haben sie kein Dach über dem Kopf, es gibt nicht genug zu Essen, fast keine Möglichkeiten der medizinischen Versorgung! Die Menschen haben Hunger und Angst - Angst vor den Deutschen und der ungewissen Zukunft; Angst vor Krankheiten, wie Typhus. Von diesem Elend berichtet dieses Buch.
